Prohibited Items

Version 1, published October 18, 2026. This is Acme Dumpsters’s document; Acme Dumpsters sets and can change it. Changes never alter what you accepted with an existing booking.

See the list shown at checkout. Prohibited items found in the load are charged at the posted surcharge.

The list for FL

  • Batteries (car, lithium, rechargeable)

Fire risk in the truck and at the landfill; lead and lithium are regulated.

Auto-parts stores and household hazardous waste (HHW) drop-offs take them.

  • Tires

Landfills refuse whole tires; they trap gas and float to the surface.

Tire shops take them for a small fee.

  • Wet paint, stains, thinners and solvents

Liquids leak, contaminate the load and are hazardous waste.

Fully dried latex paint in an open can is usually fine; check with the hauler. Oil-based products go to HHW.

  • Oils, fuels and propane tanks

Flammable; tanks can explode when compacted.

Propane exchanges take tanks; oil goes to auto-parts stores or HHW.

  • Appliances containing refrigerant

Refrigerant must be recovered by a certified technician before disposal (EPA rules).

Ask the hauler; many accept them with a surcharge after refrigerant recovery.

  • Fluorescent tubes and CFL bulbs

Contain mercury; several states require recycling.

    Hardware-store take-back or HHW.

  • Asbestos and suspected asbestos materials

Regulated hazardous material; requires licensed abatement and a permitted facility.

Licensed abatement contractor; never place in a roll-off.

  • Medical and biohazard waste

    Infectious; regulated.

Pharmacy take-back for drugs; sharps containers to approved drop-offs.

  • Electronics (e-waste)

Contain lead, mercury and lithium; many states ban them from landfills.

Retailer take-back or county e-waste events.

  • Household and industrial chemicals

Toxic, corrosive or reactive; cannot go to a municipal landfill.

    HHW drop-off.

  • Hot water tanks

Trap water and sediment; many facilities refuse them in mixed loads.

Scrap-metal yards accept drained tanks; ask the hauler.

  • Railroad ties and telephone poles

Creosote-treated wood is not accepted at most landfills.

Specialised C&D facilities only; ask the hauler.

  • Aerosol cans with contents

Pressurised; can rupture in the compactor.

Empty cans are fine; full ones go to HHW.

Accepted for a fee

  • Concrete, dirt or roofing filling more than half the container: $150.00

No FL-specific landfill ban was documented in the regulatory note; the base list applies. Landfill and county rules still vary; the hauler's additions below are authoritative for this storefront. Verification item for ops/counsel: confirm state landfill bans (tires, yard waste, white goods, lead-acid batteries, used oil) before the metro launch.
